Darling,<\/p>\n

I should be home by the end of the week.\u00a0 I hope that pleases both you and young Graham.\u00a0 Unfortunately I will not receive any letters from you now as I\u2019m leaving this island in the morning and shall be staying a few days on another closer to home.\u00a0 I would like to have known if the dear little chap has noticed my absence although it seems silly to think that he should \u2013 at his age at least.\u00a0 I dare say that even 3 weeks will have caused a marked change in his size & behaviour \u2013 to my keen fresh eye.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know where the boys have gone so I\u2019ll use Eddie\u2019s machine for a while.\u00a0 Went over one of the navy ships today and didn\u2019t get back until after tea was over.\u00a0 It was an eye-opener of a trip but I can\u2019t say much about it in this letter.<\/p>\n

Yesterday went up the coast in a \u201cduck\u201d (one of those amphibious motor vehicles you may have seen in the streets at times).\u00a0 It is all so damn silly to be driving straight from a road in to the sea.\u00a0 The authorities gave us permission to visit Daoe [Daeo, Daejo or Doewo]\u00a0\u00a0village which is just outside the perimeter which is held by the yanks.\u00a0 There are about 2300 natives in the little area.\u00a0 Some are refugees from the Celebes and Borneo.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never seen so many blooming children in one spot before \u2013 must have been about 4 to every adult.\u00a0 The natives here are much more civilised than those of New Guinea.\u00a0 Under Dutch control they are well looked after.\u00a0 Schooling is compulsory and they are taught to speak and write Malay.\u00a0 The village also sports a hospital, which is under the guidance of a Javanese doctor who graduated in a medical school in Java.\u00a0 A pretty good job considering the wildness of the country.\u00a0 The people are rather good looking some of the little girls particularly so.\u00a0 The babies are cute but dirty and all of them are covered in yaws whatever they may be\u2026they look pretty horrid anyway.<\/p>\n

The boys seem to think me a bit nuts posting you a letter which will in all probability arrive home after me.\u00a0 However you like letters and I\u2019m a very obliging gentleman.<\/p>\n
