Dear Jesso,<\/p>\n

Arrived safely at the address I gave you \u2013 am now on the other side of the blinking equator & a long way from home \u2013 4000 miles someone informs me.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure pleased that the plane travel is all over for a few weeks (perhaps 2) at least \u2013 did another 3 hours over water again this morning \u2013 you can get a bit too much of that sort of thing.<\/p>\n

This is a very busy spot \u2013 hundreds of planes of all varieties line the strips.\u00a0 Just the right kind of bait for Jap bombers.\u00a0 Fortunately they have left the place alone for the last ten days \u2013 whether that means they\u2019ll be over again when the moon waxes bright remains to be seen.\u00a0 I hope the Spitfires have frightened them away for a while.<\/p>\n

This is a real tropical island \u2013 hot steamy and green.\u00a0 Ferns & lilies grow in wonderful profusion \u2013 it makes my heart bleed to see what the plants can do for themselves up here without effort \u2013 compare them to those loafing ferns sicking their miserable existence away around our pool.\u00a0 How are the fitties?\u00a0 Just fitting about as usual?<\/p>\n

These ferns look much the same in shape as those to be found round the markets, the main difference being that the Sydney specimens seem to have been dehydrated.<\/p>\n

It is raining with perpendicular steadiness of a bath shower \u2013 and just as wetting.\u00a0 All it needs is a Sadie Thompson & the urge for me to relive Somerset Maugham\u2019s play \u201cRain\u201d \u2013 Perhaps it is because of the rain that the air is so mild.\u00a0 No suggestion of the intense heat we have been led to expect.\u00a0 A pretty stiff breeze has blown up now driving dobbing spots of rain into the tent in which I am writing.<\/p>\n

Wep’s friend, actor Chips Rafferty (aka John Goffage) was on Morotai Island at the same time shooting a film.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The tent incidently belongs to one John Goffage \u2013 alias \u201cChips\u201d Rafferty who is leaving tomorrow to take over his role in the movie \u201cOverlanders\u201d.\u00a0 I was standing outside his tent when I heard a yell \u201cChrist! Billie Pidgeon!\u201d\u00a0 Had quite a yarn with him \u2013 he told us to find ourselves a hole to dive into if occasion arose. \u2013 It still rains.<\/p>\n

\"17\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The natives up here are definitely Malayan \u2013 their features I refer to \u2013 their satorial (?) get up is more of an American GI nature \u2013 seems to have been plenty of battering going on with the Yanks who are in preponderance on the island.\u00a0 The natives generally seem to affect long & grizzled mustachios \u2013 awkward for soup but then I don\u2019t suppose the ignorant cows have soup. That\u2019s not good \u2013 but I\u2019ll see some more of them later.<\/p>\n

The Japs are sitting in the hills about 2 miles off getting their yellow bums wet & their prayer belts soggy.\u00a0 Our brave American allies are keeping them at this respectable distance \u2013 I hope.<\/p>\n

Eddie has started banging away at a type writer \u2013 Shades of Darwin!\u00a0 Both he & Jack took the knock on the vaccination racket.\u00a0 Their arms are a sight to behold.\u00a0 Mine has had almost disappeared whilst they are sporting great red circles topped by horrid looking blisters.\u00a0 I suppose I have previous vaccination to thank for my immunity.\u00a0 They both have been at swooning point with hunger almost every day since we left home.\u00a0 Air Transport has been so arranged as to inevitably deprive us of a meal.\u00a0 Don\u2019t care much myself, for I never did take to army cooking.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all for tonight darling girl.\u00a0 Does my little Irish mick miss me?\u00a0 Is he sitting up or anything during the last week?\u00a0 Tell him I shall call him to account if he doesn\u2019t do what his old ma tells him.\u00a0 Hope Mum is getting over all the trouble & is managing to adjust herself to what things are.\u00a0 It must be pretty awful for the old dear.\u00a0 All her point in life swept away like that.\u00a0 Try to get her to stay with us a while.<\/p>\n
