Forces<br \/>\nMoresby<\/p>\n<p>Wed 25<sup>th<\/sup> 26<sup>th<\/sup> or 27<sup>th<br \/>\n<\/sup>[26 Jan 1944]<\/p>\n<p>Darling,<\/p>\n<p>How would you be feeling this morning?\u00a0 Taking it easy on the verandah?\u00a0 Keeping the mosquitoes off?\u00a0 I am managing that quite well now that I have commandeered a decent American hammock from the P. Relations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5818\" style=\"width: 1260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5818 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wepidgeon.com\/pidgeonpost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-New-Guinea-1944-01-26_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1260\" height=\"1369\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hammock with built in mosquito net and rain roof, Scarlet Beach Camp near Finschhafen, New Guinea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A legitimate transaction I hasten to add it\u2019s a very flash doover \u2013 a hammock with waterproof roof and walls of mosquito net joined together with zippers.\u00a0 In I hops &amp; does myself up like a ruddy meat safe while the anoppeles wave frustrated stingers without.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5819\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5819\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5819 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wepidgeon.com\/pidgeonpost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-New-Guinea-1944-01-26_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1220\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hammock with built in mosquito net and rain roof, Scarlet Beach Camp near Finschhafen, New Guinea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Am in another camp again.\u00a0 Have pitched tent with Roy Hodgkinson &amp; another fellow.\u00a0 I\u2019m praising the place when I say it\u2019s a pretty dreary joint.\u00a0 I\u2019m told it is typical of a forward site.\u00a0 No lights, so these letters are written hastily after tea.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t done a drawing in your letters yet because I\u2019ve been too b- sour.\u00a0 Last night I slept or rather attempted to, on a bed of coral covered with a ground sheet and a blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Trucks coming &amp; going all night &amp; 3 air raid alerts.\u00a0 I suppose I managed a couple of hours shuteye before my hip bone wore through the skin like a hole in the heel of a sock. That\u2019s 2 nights out of 4 I have been awake since I arrived on the northern coast of N. Guinea.\u00a0 Haven\u2019t done much work so far for the simple reason I have not been able to settle down. On two occasions the camps have shifted their sites the day after I arrived.\u00a0 The humidity is terrific.\u00a0 I wish they\u2019d have this show on down near the pole or someplace like.\u00a0 My brain\u2019s like a soggy lump of porridge.<\/p>\n<p>After about 4 or 5 days here I\u2019ll move off to the Ramu Valley, spend maybe a week or more &amp; start back for the Mainland where I shall have to go on to the tablelands for a week.\u00a0 Then back \u2013 I hope.\u00a0 The rush has got me something rattled.\u00a0 However I have about 5 pictures lined up already \u2013 should have any amount by the time I get through.<\/p>\n<p>Thurs Morning [27 Jan 1944] \u2013 Not much sleep again last night \u2013 seem to be taking your complaint over.\u00a0 First rain last night.\u00a0 Came down in sheets.\u00a0 My sweet little hammock kept it off.<\/p>\n<p>Hope you are eating well.<\/p>\n<p>How did that brew turn out?<\/p>\n<p>My regards to junior.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of love<\/p>\n<p>Bill<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am managing that quite well now that I have commandeered a decent American hammock from the P.
