{"id":3281,"date":"2024-01-18T10:00:13","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T23:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wepidgeon.com\/pidgeonpost\/?p=3281"},"modified":"2024-01-13T13:23:59","modified_gmt":"2024-01-13T02:23:59","slug":"war-letters-new-guinea-18-jan-1944-townsville-lousy-with-troops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wepidgeon.com\/pidgeonpost\/?p=3281","title":{"rendered":"War Letters &#8211; New Guinea: 18 Jan 1944, Townsville; Lousy with troops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DPR Unit<br \/>\nTownsville<br \/>\nTuesday, Midday<br \/>\n[18 Jan 1944]<\/p>\n<p>Darling,<\/p>\n<p>How\u2019s my little lonely honey?\u00a0 As hot as I am?\u00a0 Boy that is plenty.\u00a0 It\u2019s much hotter here than in Darwin.\u00a0 I\u2019ve done nothing but sweat &amp; replace it with a noggin of beer.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t get away from Brisbane on the midday plane as I had anticipated, consequently poor Willie had to be wakened at 3.45 am on Monday to get an American Navy plane to Townsville.\u00a0 We arrived at the aerodrome at 4.45 but the plane was not due to leave until six so we just sat around on our bums in the darkness for about an hour.\u00a0 Couldn\u2019t get booked through to Moresby direct \u2013 hence the above address.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5755\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5755\" style=\"width: 729px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5755 size-full\" style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; box-shadow: #ffffff 0px 0px 0px 6px; color: #000000;\" src=\"http:\/\/wepidgeon.com\/pidgeonpost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-New-Guinea-2-Townsville-20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"729\" height=\"1136\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Douglas C47 transport plane with US serveice men<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u00a0was the only Australian aboard the big Douglas.\u00a0 One of the fellow yanks was an artist from the Chicago Tribune.\u00a0 An elderly kind of Carl Shreveish looking guy with a long upper lip &amp; untidy dress.\u00a0 We left just as the sun was coming up over the sea, the whole vision was a blend of purple &amp; red gold slashed and scored by brilliant reflected light from the rivers &amp; pools.\u00a0 Couldn\u2019t see much after that as the sun brought the mist up and obscured most of our vision.\u00a0 Arrived here about 9.30am which is a pretty fast trip considering its nearly 700 miles.\u00a0 We flew mostly about 10,000 ft \u2013 about 400 feet above the clouds which looked like wads a kapok methodically sprinkled over the earth below.<\/p>\n<p>Townsville is a most picturesque place to approach by air.\u00a0 The town itself nestles beneath a huge rocky mass called Castle Hill &amp; fringes the big bay which is blocked towards the sea by the mountainous Magnetic island.\u00a0 The airport here is an hellishly busy place \u2013 planes of all descriptions come &amp; go every few minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5756 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wepidgeon.com\/pidgeonpost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-New-Guinea-2-Townsville-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1187\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is lousy with troops.\u00a0 2 to every 1 civilian.\u00a0 The beer position is acute in the town\u2019s hotels \u2013 they charge 2\/- deposit on the glass.\u00a0 Fortunately for us pukka sahibs there is an Officer\u2019s Club \u2013 much bigger than that in Brisbane.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000003174e1830000000018036375_3281\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  title=\"Wep was most probably billeted at the Seaview Hotel on the Strand (cnr Gregory Street), Townsville, which was the wartime home of the Australian Officer&#8217;s Club. Personnel from the Australian Women&#8217;s Army Service (AWAS) staffed the club. In a Report on civilian morale, the picture was painted that the Officer&#8217;s Club was the scene of regular &#8220;drunken debauches&#8221; and &#8220;depraved orgies&#8221;.
