{"id":223,"date":"2023-07-23T08:00:30","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T22:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wepidgeon.com\/pidgeonpost\/?p=223"},"modified":"2023-08-15T15:48:43","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T05:48:43","slug":"war-letters-darwin-friday-poss-6-aug-1943-back-to-base-formal-mess-drink-and-noisy-correspondents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wepidgeon.com\/pidgeonpost\/?p=223","title":{"rendered":"War Letters &#8211; NW Australia: 23 July 1943, Darwin; Back to base and noisy correspondents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>W.E.Pidgeon<br \/>\nC\/O DPR Unit<br \/>\nArmy Post Office<br \/>\nDarwin<\/p>\n<p>Friday<br \/>\n[23 Jul 1943]<\/p>\n<p>Darling,<\/p>\n<p>Am back again to the old home comforts.\u00a0 There are only 4 correspondents here at the moment, thank heavens.\u00a0 But those at present here are damned voluble \u2013 voceriferously arguing the toss on world social system.\u00a0 I\u2019m too weak to join in.\u00a0 The mob down the road had a formal mess last night (as they go once a week) this seemed \u2013 or rather did \u2013 get away on us all.\u00a0 After beer and sherry \u2013 we settled down to some steady gin drinking.\u00a0 Unfortunately liquor has immediate and body shattering effect.\u00a0 Hangovers are pretty shaking in this here territory.<\/p>\n<p>Last two nights have been plenty cold.\u00a0 To my sorry I had taken only 2 blankets with me.\u00a0 One to sleep on &amp; the other to cover me.\u00a0 Not enough \u2013 your sweet hubby was always glad to see the dawn as most of the night I just lay and shivered.<\/p>\n<p>This is a bugger of a place to write letters.\u00a0 One cannot continue a line of thought.\u00a0 Willy nilly the conversation about obtrudes.<\/p>\n<p>Haven\u2019t had any letters from you yet.\u00a0 What gibes?\u00a0 Too much social life?\u00a0 Am anticipating one tomorrow.\u00a0 I\u2019ll break down &amp; cry or go plumb \u201cTroppo\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry to say that I\u2019m too tired to write much tonight.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to be home at the moment lying in my beauto bed reading a thriller-diller.\u00a0 Or just lying, yes?\u00a0 Are you being my good little sweet model wifie?\u00a0 Has Tommy gone north yet?<\/p>\n<p>Lots of love and special juicy kisses.\u00a0 Save \u2018em all up for me.\u00a0 No giving any away \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Goodnight sweet heart \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Bill<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5 minutes later<\/p>\n<p>I cannot leave you so.\u00a0 How\u2019s Ellie?
